Mocha Java is believed to be the first coffee introduced to Europe by the traders and merchants of the Dutch East India Company. Traders sailed through the Red Sea to the port city of Mocha in Yemen to source high quality arabica coffee beans. They continued their journey through the Bab al-Mandeb Strait to the Gulf of Aden and into the Indian Ocean. Continuing their voyage east throught the Sunda Strait, a narrow passage through the Indonesian isands of Sumatra and Java, they added arabica beans from Java to their unique blend - which came to be known as the Mocha Java blend.
The Straits Blend is a modern interpretation of the original style of coffee. We source arabica beans from Java and from East African farms in Ethiopia and Kenya. Given their proximity to Mocha, these beans possess a similar taste profile to those originally sourced from Yemen.
Our blend delivers an intense flavor of floral, fruitiness from the East African beans and of an earthy, spiciness of the more full-bodied Java beans.
Straits Blend is a Medium roast.
